Chapter 13

Grace rushed to place small bits and pieces of herbs, dried flowers, and barks in small bundles, then placed them all in one of the traveling bags Lord Alexander gave her. If any of the men were hurt during the journey, she would have need of them.

Lady Mary hovered next to the blue gown Grace had made to wear for her wedding. She touched the delicate flowers Grace had embroidered into the bodice with thread only a shade lighter than the fabric. “You will need to take your wedding gown, Grace. You should wear it for your audience with the regent.”

“I stitched it to wear for Gabriel.”

“Aye, and he will be with you before your audience with the regent, and see you then. All will go well, and you will wear it before a priest as soon as the meeting is over.”

Grace searched Mary’s face. “Do you truly believe the regent will rule for Gabriel and me to wed?”

“Aye, I do.” Mary expertly folded the gown, rolled a piece of linen around it, and tied it with string. “Gabriel is willing to make sacrifices to do what is right for your clan and for you. He is strong enough to be their leader. Lord Ramsay is too entrenched in Edinburgh to wish to live in the Highlands or take an interest in what is right for your people. You must point that out to the regent when you speak to him.” She rolled the kirtle and shift up in the same manner. She stuffed the package into the leather bag as well, and buckled it closed.

“Aye, I will, Lady Mary.”

“Not lady to you any longer, Grace. Only Mary.” She smoothed back wavy strands of hair that had escaped her braid, a frown wrinkling her brow. “You finish here. I’ve thought of a few other things you may need along the way, and I will bring them to ye shortly.”

Grace’s eyes stung with emotion. “Thank you, Mary.”

Mary hugged her and rushed out of the room. Grace had just finished putting her brush and scissors in the bag when she returned.

“You must take my cloak as a gift. ’Twill be cold at night, and ’tis lined with fur to ensure yer warmth.”

“I canna take such a gift, Lady Mary.”

“Only Mary, now, Grace. And aye, ye can and must. I had Alexander t’ share his warmth.”

And as much as he would want to, Gabriel would not be able to share his. She would be alone among the men. The trip ahead would be difficult.

Would she ever return to Caisteal Sith? She looked around the room. There were precious few items left. Two gowns, a kirtle and two shifts. The basket Gabriel had given her. She moved to it and touched the handle.

“Should I pack the rest of my things?” Grace asked.

“Nay. I dinna think I am ready for that yet, Grace.” Lady Mary’s eyes filled with tears, and she leaned close to embrace her.

Her friend’s loss of composure triggered Grace’s own tears, and for several minutes they clung to each other.
